Opatija, Croatia ππ·
Okay… Opatija might just be one of those places you don’t hear enough about. πππ·
If Croatia is on your summer travel list, put Opatija on it!
And if you're coming from the US and planning your big Euro summer… this is definitely one to save. πΊπΈ✈️ππ·
Opatija is this ridiculously cute little seaside town where you can spend the day swimming, eating, walking along the water and then sit at a cute bar in the evening watching the sea.
Basically… yes please. π
π️ First things first: the beach
One thing to know if you're expecting Italy-style beaches:
Croatia = stone and rocky beaches.
You're not going to find endless soft sandy beaches everywhere. Opatija is much more about the beautiful coastline, crystal-clear water and those little spots where you can walk straight into the Adriatic.
We stayed at Hotel Domino, and honestly, the location was SO good.
There were steps going right down into the beach from the hotel.
No packing the entire family into the car with 17 beach bags just to find somewhere to park.
And honestly, having the beach basically right outside the hotel door was one of my favorite things.
π And then… FOOD.
Because obviously I can't write a travel post without talking about food!
We had dinner at RuΕΎmarin and the ambiance was SO good.
Like… cute vacation dinner where you're sitting there thinking, “Okay, maybe I should just move here.”
And if you go:
GET THE FRUTTI DI MARE. ππ¦π¦
Seriously.
πΉ Nights in Opatija
This is another thing I loved.
Opatija has that cute European summer evening vibe.
You can walk around, find a little bar, sit outside, have a drink and just watch the beach and the people.
No crazy nightclub itinerary required.
Just good food + drinks + the sea + a cute town.
π BUT… LET'S TALK ABOUT TRAFFIC.
If you're driving to Opatija during high season — BE PREPARED.
Traffic can get BUSY.
Like “Why did we think driving here was a good idea?” busy.
So if you're planning a summer trip, definitely give yourself extra time and don't schedule everything down to the minute.
Because European vacation rule #1:
The road will take longer than you thought it would.
πΈ A few things to know
Our parking at the hotel was €15 per night.
And two lounge chairs + an umbrella were €25.
Could we have saved the money?
Probably.
Did we?
Absolutely not.
Because how often do we actually get to splurge a little on vacation?
Sometimes you just have to enjoy it — umbrella, lounge chair and all. ☀️π₯
The ONE downside we found with Domino was that the beach bar closed at 6 PM on Saturday.
And honestly…
WHO decided 6 PM was enough?!
I'm just getting into vacation mode at 6 PM!
❤️ Would I go back?
YES.
Opatija is cute, relaxing, has great food, beautiful water and that perfect little European coastal-town feeling.
And I especially love that it can work for different kinds of travelers — whether you're a European looking for an easy summer getaway or an American planning a bigger Croatia/Italy/Europe adventure.
Put Opatija on the list. ππ·❤️
Just remember:
π High-season traffic = patience
πͺ¨ Beaches = mostly stone/rocky, not sandy
π Frutti di mare = ORDER IT
πΉ Evening drinks by the water = YES
☀️ Umbrella + two chairs = €25 when we went
π And sometimes vacation means spending a little extra on things you don't need but absolutely want.
Go pack your bags. ✈️π§³
